MENACE OF STRIKES

AUSTRALIAN MINERS MEMORIAL SERVICES PLAN DEVELOPMENT FEARED SYDNEY, August 2 It is feared in some quarters that the proposed services to be held by miners on Thursday in memory of men who lost their lives in pit disasters last year ma 3' develop into one-day strikes throughout Australia. The services are to be held simultaneously with the opening of tho Miners' National Convention in Sydney to consider the question of a general strike for improved conditions.

The miners employed at South Bulli Colliery decided not to work yesterday as a protest against what they regarded as an inadequate inspection of the mine by the Minister of Labour and Industry, Mr. A. Mair, on his recent official visit. Mr. Mair went to South Bulli on July 27 to intervene in a dispute there and to investigate the miners' complaints.

AIRCRAFT WORKERS CESSATION OF WORK NEW INDUSTRY CHECKED (Received August 3, 12.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE. August 2 About 300 engineers and other tradesmen employed by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation at its factory at Fisherman's Bend have gone on strike. This is disorganising Australia's newest industry. The dispute was caused by a proposed new award. The strike is still unsettled as the employers are refusing to confer with the union leaders until the men resume work. The Minister of Defence, Mr. H. V. Thorby, appealed to the men on the ground of urgency to return to work.
