RICCARTON TRACK

JUMPERS IN ACTION ALL IRISH MOST IMPRESSIVE NOCTURNUS AGAIN IN FAVOUR ERINATION STRIKES HEAVILY [uv TKLECUAX'H —OWN COUHKSPONDKNT] CHttISTCIIUItCLI, Tuesday The outside of tho course proper was open for fast work at Riccarton to-day, but on account of the late thawing of a bard frost the trials were delayed for over an hour.

Many horses made use of the track, but times were anything but fast. The first horses to work were C. Emerson's pair, Happy Night and Nightcalm, who strode over a mile in 1.51 3-5, taking 55s for the last half. There were several other mile tasks, mostly by jumpers. Wild Irishman and Surge took 1.5:2, Clarion Call iinislied well in front of Brvee Street, Valpeen and Kilberis in 1.50, and Jolly Beggar beat Courtyard and Lone Raider in the same time. I'adishah, who is showing no effects from his fall on Saturday, and Top Rank occupied 1.57. The best of the half-mile sprints was that of the three-year-old Raeburn, who, with Kilrobi; as a mate, recorded 4!) 4-ss. Top Row and Paper Note were together, clear of Queen oi Song, at the end of half a mile homo in 50 2-ss. But all other similar tasks were comparatively slow. These included: Wine Card, 53 2-ss; Roinarin, 52 l-ss; Great Hope, 60s; Recollection and Master Dingle, 54 3-ss; Colonel Rouge, 525; Trench Fight, 545; Lady Leigh, Royal Chief and Lady llosette, 535.

Sovereign Ijndy strode over seven furlongs in 1.35. Swordstick and J?ipticle took '1.5J5 1-5; Palmyra unci Gillie, I.MG. Willie Win went well in covering a mile ill 1.50. Roy 3Jim gave Glencos a start at the six furlongs uiul boat liini home ill 1.21 3-5. Night Hawk and Gay Parado covered five furlongs well in 1.6 2-5. Nightdress and Garonne took 1.8. Ov«ir Main Steeplechase Course Much interest centred in a schooling task over the big country by Erination (J. Muir), Nightbound (R. Bottle), All Irish (.Mr. M. O'Connor) and ltedolent (J. Murfitt,). All Irish quickly.ran to the front and, giving his customary dashing display, led throughout from Urination and Nightbound, who raced abreast most of the way. Redolent started in the rear, but finished with the latter pair. Special attention was paid to Erination, who cjiused a sensation at Trentham by refusing to school before the Wellington Steeplechase meeting. On this occasion ho did not give any trouble, excepting that lie hesitated going to the post and rails and he hit this fence fairly lieavilj. The mistake did not ailect him, as he and Nightbound took the top brush and Cutts' well. On returning, blood was flowing freely from one of Erination's front legs," caused by an artery being severed when ho came into contact with the post and rails. Veterinary attention was at once forthcoming, and it was not thought that the trouble would be serious. . All Irish does not look the part of a high-class steeplechaser, but lie negotiated each of tlio big fences with tho greatest of ease. Nightbound shaped exceptionally well in his first experience of such formidable obstacles, and he should win some money at the meeting. Redolent was out to gain education by following at an interval, but by fast and accurate fencing lie was up with the others at Cutts', which he cleared in good style.

Flashlight Slightly Injured Flashlight (R. Register) and Nocturnus (F. E. Baker) raced abreast over the first five fences, but at the carriage paddock brush, which Nocturnus cleared without apparent effort, Flashlight pushed through it and narrowly missed a fall, his rider making a good recovery. At Cutts', the last fence of tho allotted round. Flashlight repeated his mistake, this time suffering a heavy fall. Ilis rider escaped, but Flashlight appeared slightly to injure a shoulder. Nocturnus completed his work with a brilliant effort, and lii.s round created a big impression. He will probably be given another school this week, and a repetition of today's showing will bring him into strong favour for next week's racing. On tho inside steeplechase course, Brigadore (Boale) and Bright Red (G. Linton) were companions ovor eight fences, both jumping without mistake. Chaste (Linton), Contract _(W. Shand) and Tautau Maid (V. LangI'ord) jumped five hurdles together, Chaste showing to most advantage. Corban (Langford) cleared five hurdles at a fast pace. He jumped badly in his race on Saturday,, hitting each fence low down, but he did attractivo work to-day, and if he races up to that form he will bo useful next week. Guilder (J. Murfitt) jumped six hurdles satisfactorily, but was not allowed to go at them as fast as previously.
