GORDON SCHOOL

iNEW ROOM OPENED [bt telegraph —OWN' correspondent] TE AROHA, Tuesday The new schoolroom at Gordon was officially opened by Mr. R. Mackie, ward member of the Auckland Lducation Board. The ceremony coincided with the celebrations of the school's 45th anniversary, and was attended by about 150 people, including many past pupils of the school. Mr. Mackie gave a brief resume of the school's history. The first building was erected in 1892, after efforts had been made by the residents to obtain a school for two years. The school, known by the name of Armadale, was opened in 1893 with a roll of 17 pupils, the first chairman of the school committee being Air. J. Orr. The name was subsequently changed to Gordon and a teacher's residence was erected in IJUU. The present additions have been made necessary by a rise in the roll from -0 to 40, due to a number of new sharemilkers' residences in the distn et. Owing to the age of the existing building it was not thought advisable to add to it, and a detached room has therefore been built, 22ft. by 21ft. 6m., with a cloakroom and open verandah.
