NEW CUNARD LINER
MAURETANIA LAUNCHED SHIP CONSTRUCTION RECORD LONDON, July 28 The now 30.000-ton liner Mauritania was launched by Ladv Bates, wife of the chairman of the Cunard Line, in the presence of a large gathering at Caimncll Lairds yards, Birkenhead, today.
Tho Mauritania is tho largest liner over built in England and, having been laid down on May 21, ]UM7, represents a record in ship construction. Nearly 17,000 tons of hteel were built into her in 12 months. Two thousand men, increasing to 0000 before completion, were employed upon building the ship, which also provided work for many thousands of bands all over the country. Govan, for instance, provided tho * fleet of 26 Dicsel-engined lifeboats; London, the two propellers each weighing 2.5 tons; Rugby, the four great turbo-generators to provide tbe energy for lighting, cooking, ventilation, heating, passenger and goods lifts, as well as for tho sound apparatus for three cinemas, the wireless, and the ship-to-shoro telephony stations.
