FIFTY YEARS AGO
MELBOURNE EXHIBITION The opening; of the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition took place 50 years ago. The following is an extract from the Xl'.w Zkai.anii Hkkai.d of July 30, 1888: " The Melbourne Centennial Exhibition is to be opened on Wednesday next, August 1. Judging by accounts in Australian papers it promises to be an enormous" success. From files of Australian papers we learn that there is little hope of the work being advanced to anything approaching completion on the day of the opening. The German court, as all along, is the most forward of any, and there will not be any difficulty in completing it in time. Tha next in advance is the New Zealand court, which promises to be a most interesting one and truly represents-, tive of the colony. A large amount of work in the other courts remains still to be done."
