MODERN POST OFFICE

AVONDALE BUILDING WORK ALMOST COMPLETED Tlio new Avondale post office is now noaring completion and it is hoped that it will bo finished within the next three weeks. A single-storey concrete structure, the building is situated on the corner of Rosebank Road and Great North I toad, a site that i.s almost in the centre of the busy shopping centre. In addition to the large public office, provision is being made for a big mailsorting room. A special room will he set aside for the postmaster's office and a cycleshed for the use ol telegraph messengers has been constructed at the back of the main building. The main entrance, facing the Great North Road, opens into a lobby in which the posting boxes will be placed. .Mr. S. L. Piper was the architect of the building, which is of modern design and is well lighted by several large, patterned windows. Central heating apparatus is being installed.

The interior woodwork is finished in riniu, and painter,s are at present at work on the ceiling whieh is to he coloured in five different shades of cream. Tho contractors are Messrs. J. A. Penman and Son, of Mount Albert," and the contract price is about £IOOO. The old building has served the district as a post oflice for the.past .'l2 years, it is an old hotel converted into a post office and it could not he altered structurally in any way to suit tho needs of I,he postal authorities.
