TAKAPUNA AFFAIRS
THE ARREARS OF RATES DISCUSSION BY COUNCIL Considerable discussion arose at the meeting of the -Tak.ipuna Borough. Council last night when the question of raising a further loan for the carrying out of several works was raised. The Mayor, Mr. J. Guiniven, objected to the 'proposal on the grounds that it was*the duty of the council to collect the outstanding rates before a loan was raised. Mr. T. M. Hollo -supported the Mayor and stated that as the ajrears of rates amounted to £lo,ooo, the question was not one of raising a loan, but of collecting the outstanding rates. "Drastic steps are going to be taken against those ratepayers in arrears," said Mr. C. H. M. Wills, endorsing Mr. Hollo's remarks. ; On the motion of Mr. Guiniven tho matter was deferred until March 31, 1939. With reference to the proposal of the Devonport Borough Council _to establish a crematorium at O'Neill's Point Cemetery, the council entered an emphatic protest on account of: the probable reductions of valuations in the vicinity,-. A letter was received from the town clerk of the Auckland City Council offering a supply of water at the rate of Is a 100 gallons for a 21 years period, the charges to be reviewed at the end of each seven years. It was agreed to approach the Devonport and Northcote Borough Council's regarding the acceptance of the offer.
