RUGBY FOOTBALL

COLLEGE PAY MATCHES INTEREST OF THE PUBLIC AUCKLAND UNION DISCUSSION The decline in public interest in collope Rugby in Auckland was discussed at the Auckland Rugby Union's meeting last evening, when it was announced that for College Day, on August 6, the main match would he Al'ount. Albeit Grammar v. Sacred Heart College, and the curtain-raiser Iving s v. o<ranimar. Mr. S. Cleal said that interest in College Day appeared to be waning. He suggested circularising headmasters so that llto schools and their supporters would be well represented.

The chairman, Mr. A. Baker, said that the standard of play in the schools had fallen away during the depression, but the football this year was a good deal better. A few years ago, he said, main interest was centred in the match between King's and Grammar. To-day many ,\oung men, still in their 'teens, who would formerly be interested in that game would be found on the golf links.

Mr. L. Colgan thought there would be more public interest if the teams were numbered, but it was stated that several headmasters were definitely against the numbering of teams.

Mr. L. Meek said that if the teams were allowed to play before the public it seemed illogical not- to allow them to be numbered. Mr. J. lierrick: They object to any suggestion of commercialising school Rugby. Clashing of Colours

A further letter was received from the Auckland Kcfcrees' Association on the question of contusion between club colours, suggesting that the Union should definitely intimate to certain clubs that they must chyngo their jerseys when playing in matches where confusion was likely. The association named nine clubs whose colours were liable to be confused with those of others, particularly on a wet day, and suggested that the whole question should be investigated by a subcommittee.

.Messrs. O. S. Harvey and L. Colgan were appointed a snb-conimittee to report on the whole matter before the end of the present season, with a view to formulating a plan to do away with confusion by introducing gradual alteration in certain designs of jerseys, at the convenience of the clubs copcerned.

A complaint was received from the Referees' Association concerning the state of the Western Springs Stadium, tho ultimatum being given that referees were not prepared to referee there until the ground was put in order.

It was stated that no complaints had been received from clubs, but it was arranged to transfer Saturday's games to another ground, the grounds committee to report in the meantime.

A-n unusual ease was brought up in a letter from a referee, .Mr. A. L. Forsyth, who stated that last Saturday, refereeing a game between College Rifles and Manukau intermediates, he awarded a try, but disallowed it on fijiding thr.t it had been scored in tbo dead-ball area. The lines were i>raj:tically invisible on account of the rain, but ho later realised he had 110 power to alter a decision once made. The try would have given College Rifles a win by (i points to 3. The Chairman; I think this referee did the right thing in disallowing the try. The spirit of the gauie must be taken into consideration. It was decided to hold the matter in abeyance. Games at Onehunga A request was received from the Manukau Club that consideration be given to the question of playing Oallaher Shield games at Onehunga. It was stated that only three such games had beeii played there in the past three years. The chairman said that the request was quite a reasonable one. It was referred to the match committee for favourable consideration. It was decided to seek from the New Zeac land Union an interpretation concerning certain referees' rulings referred to in a letter from Mr. H. C. Rowlands. After some discussion it was decided that the playing of lower grade players in the senior pennant competition should not be held to affect- their status, and that members of teams not engaged in the pennant competition might be allowed to participate in it with another club. The following ground officials were apJointed for Saturday:—Kden Park. Messrs. t. C'olgan, L. Meek; Show Grounds, Mr. R. Galbraith; North Shore. Mr. P. A. Syers; Takapuna. Mr. A. Jensen; Northcote. Mr. A. Miller; Sturges Park, Mr. G. White; Victoria Park, Mr. P. Sheehan; Onehunga. Mr. D. S'towes. A letter received from the Thames Union concerning a dispute over the playing of a Peace Cup match on July Ifi was discussed in committee, and it was subsequently announced that, a reply based on the information available would be drafted by a subcommittee.
