OBITUARY

PROFESSOR E. W. BROWN News has been received of the death of Professor K. "NY. Brown, of Yale University, at, the age of 72. Professor Brown, who was a distinguished scientist and an authority on the lunar tlieorv, was born at Hull and became a fellow of Christ's College. Cambridge. He became professor of mathematics at Haverford College in 1891 ; and held iliat position until 100 i. I*torn that year until 10;i2, when lie was made emeritus professor, he was professor of mathematics at ale 1 nivcrsity. Most of his publications wore on astronomical subjects, and he was at one time president of the American Astronomical Societv.

In company with Sir Oliver Lodge Professor Brown visited Australia in 1014 as a member of the Kentish Association for the Advancement of Learning. He came on to New Zealand and gave lectures at Victoria University College, Wellington, and in other centres. mr. a. f. McDonnell The death has occurred of Mr. Alexander Francis McDonnell, of Wanganui. who died in hospital from injuries suffered when he was struck by a motor vehicle on Sunday. Mr. McDonnell.' who was an authoritv on the M aori race, was formerly a resident of Auckland and was well known to the native people throughout the Dominion. He was president of the Maori Welfare League, established a short time ago. A son of the late Colonel T. W. McDonnell, who took a prominent part in Maori wars on the West Coast, Mr. McDonnell went to live in the Wa ik.it o after the death of his mother. MR. A. J. Wednesday The death has occurred of Mr. Albert Joseph Kvson. aged 80, a resident lor 50 years in Gisborne and one of the first' two postmen in the district, lie was born at Highan, Kngland. At the age of 16 Mr. hyson went to sea and made several trips in sailing ships to Madras and Melbourne. He emigrated to the Dominion in 18~t> and alter a stay in the Waikato came to Gisborne ou surveying work for two veins. He then joined the Post and Telegraph Department. Mr. hyson retired 10 years ago after -10 years' service. He is survived by four sons and torn daughters
