BRILLIANT PLAYER
PRAISE FOR L. G. CRAWLEY GREAT POWER AND CONTROL Writing in the Sunday Referee, S. King picks L. G. Crawley as the best amateur golfer he has ever seen. Crawlev was selected for the British Walker Cup team this year. King writes of him : If only lie were a better judge of distance ho would have been as good a bet as anyone for the open championship. He is terrifically long, and usually dead straight, with his wooden clubs. The same applies to his irons; he utilises his great strength to tho full, and there is control with it. I believe Crawley is just the same on the cricket field. .Jessop school batsman —as many a cricketer fielding on the boundarv line will affirm.
" Here is a concrete example of his power. Jn the Niinningdale foursomes he was getting home at the ninth hole with an iron off the {ee when A. H. Padgham and the rest of us were struggling to do so with brassier,! ,\ long-driving contest between him and (,'. .J. H. Tolle.v would be worth going a long way to see! " It has often been said that the Americans beat our golfers in these Walker Cup matches because they take the thing seriously, train and practise for it arduously, while our men simply don't bother. This cannot be said of Crawley. He is a fervent believer in training and practice, and is reputed to play 500 shots every day of his life, at a golf school if a golf course 15 not available."
