RISING OF RIVER

FLOOD JUST AVERTED MINOR DAMAGE CAUSED SOME UNFORTUNATE SETTLERS [BT TKLKGKAPH —OWN CORRKSPONDKNT] GISBORNE, Friday The level of the Waipaoa River rose last night to within a few inches of the top of the floodbanks in the neighbourhood of Waerengaahika. It receded again quickly after the peak and offered no further threat to farm lands over the major portion of the Poverty Bay flats. The river flooded an area near the mouth to some extent, but did little damage, these lands having been already heavily silted by the floods of the past eight weeks. Settlers in the vicinity are not attempting to resow their pastures until the spring. Some have had their land inundated three times in the last two-months and are hoping the Government will interest itself in their plight.
