RELIEF BY FALSE PRETENCE SOME CASES STILL OCCURRING The fact that there were still odd eases of persons making false declarations in order to obtain benefits from the Employment Promotion Fund was referred to by Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, when sentencing John Huckle to a term of imprisonment on charges of making a false statement of earnings and obtaining sustenance by talse pretences. Accused pleaded guilty. .Mr. W. A. lilack. for the Labour Department, said accused began fulltime employment on December t last, and continued to draw sustenance for four weeks. In the first two weeks accused declared that his earnings wero £1 .'is, whereas they had been £7 10s Bd. As a result of the two false declarations, he obtained an excess ol sustenance totalling L'l. Accused was ft widower, with no known dependants. Accused, who said he did not make the false declarations intentionally, was sentenced to 1-1 days' imprisonment on one charge, and fined £o on the other. On a charge of making a false statement of his earnings lor the purpose ol obtaining sustenance, George Francis Burgess was lined .L'-j 10s and costs. 10s.
