AUCKLAND PACERS

HORSES FOR ADDINGTON SEVERAL GOOD PERFORMERS F. J. SMITH'S STRONG TEAM i CAVAN CHIEF AND SANDUSKY j BY ABAYDOS There is a fair sprinkling of Auck- 1 land-trained horses entered for the first meeting of the' new trotting ; season, which opens at Addington on August 6. F. J. Smith, who usually wins a race on his visits to Christchurch, is . represented by Cavan Chief, Sandusky, Ironside and King's Warrior. Another •Takanini trainer, W. Clifton, has Gold Dredge engaged. King's Play and Policy, trained at Tamahere, will give M. .Stewart representation. • : King's Warrior won the King George Handicap and was second to Lucky Jack in the National Handicap last August. He raced consistently at the 1 Easter championship meeting, and, although on a 4.24 line,, is not without prospects in the chief events,. Kiug's , Warrior is handily placed on 12 yards in the International Handicap. 1 Ironside, who is on 12 yards in the ■ August Handicap, 4.29 class, may be a , better proposition in this race than his ■; stable mate. He was twice placed on . his last visit to Addington and on his return won the Adams. Memorial Handicap and was second to Crocus in the Mark Memorial Handicap. When fit, .Ironside can run a very sound two miles. . ( Cavan Chief and Sandusky figure on the limit of the Advance Handicap, 2.52 class. Cavan Chief,'.'whose assessed mark is 2.53; has won three races at Epsom, but has not been successful when racing away from home. Sandusky is a hardy young pacer who thrives on travelling and racing and has a fine record for consistency. Position of Gold Dredge Gold Dredge is nicely placed on the limit of the August Handicap and she would only require to reach, the meeting in her best form to seriously test her opponents. Gold Dredge' has not done much travelling, but two seasons ago, when taken to Hawera, she maintained her good record by being three times second to Bonny Azure and scoring at her fourth start. Gold Dredge is also entered for the 1 National Challenge Stakes,' in which trotters will compete with the pacers; King's Play hps recorded several winning performances at Addington, where his form last August was attractive. He failed by a very narrow margin to concede Parisienne 36 yards in the Queen Mary Handicap, but he won the Canterbury Handicap in 4.20 3-5 off 4.30. He was also successful in the mile and a-quarter Federal Handicap off 2.46, going 2.41 4-5. King's Play reached'a 4.26 mark by a win at the November meeting, and, after, a narrow defeat: in the Wellington Gold Cup, he won the Dominion Handicap, to take a 4.25 line. Although on 48 yards in the August Handicap, he is on the limit of the International Handicap. Performances of Policy Most of Policy's racing has been done in the South Island, where she won several events, including two- at Fcjrbury Park, in which she bettered 3.18. She also won at Wellington in 3.19., Since joining Steward's stable Policy ran 1 second to Zincali in the Manawatu Cup and won the Taranaki Cup. She is on the limit of the Selwyn Handicap, 2.49 class. , In addition to those trained in the North, Bonny Azure and Parisienne are owned in Auckland. Bonny Azure did not win during the season just closed, but earned place-money and also a lap prize in the New Zealand Cup. She has received a let-up of 12 yards and is on 36 yards in the August Handicap. 1 ' Parisienne, the first four-year-old to reach a 4.22 mark in two miles, is not entered for the August Handicap, but is on 24 yards in the International Handicap. She commenced a highlysuccessful season when she won the Queen Mary Handicap last August off 4.34 i n 4.25 4-5, improving to 4.20 3-5 when she scored off 4.32 in the Heathcote Handicap. She continued to improve until she finished the season with championship honours. Her five-year-old career will be watched with great interest. A Good Trotter Waikato Prince has proved a good winner since entering J. Bryce's stable and his successes include a race among a strong field of good pacers. He won the Avon Handicap last August oif 4.4U in 4.31 2-5, but his outstanding performance was in winning the Midwinter Handicap, 3.34 class, from 84 yards behind; in 3.17 2-5: He is now on 3.24 and' 4.34 and will represent the trotters in the Challenge Stakes A North Island-owned and trained trotter who has raced successfully at Epsom, Native Tree, is on 48 yards in the 3.34 Introductory Handicap, She may find her task difficult with so many improving opponents, but on a soft track the Hastings mare would not be without prospects. , CLUB SHOWS PROFIT TROTTING IN AUCKLAND In spite of six wet days out of the 11 allotted to it this season, the Auckland Trotting Club shows a net profit to be carried to capital account of £llO7.
