RUGBY FOOTBALL

match: on satueday REPRESENTATIVE FIXTURE EARLY START TO BE MADE SUBSIDIARY COMPETITION In order to give patrons of the Auckland v. North Auckland match on Saturday an opportunity of listening in to the Rugby test in Sydney, the Auckland Rugby Union decided at its meeting last night to start the representative fixture at 2.-15 p.m. A letter was received from the Bay of Plenty Union expressing regret that Auckland could not accede to its request to send a representative team to its district this season. The Chairman, Mr. A. Baker: I presume you have all read this morning's Herald. Mr. Baker then read out criticism voiced by Mr. W. Henderson, secretary of the Bay of Plenty Union, of the Auckland Rugby Union's attitude toward country football. "I think this shows a lack of tact and it is absolutely incorrect," he said. "It does not do anyone any good." He added that a strong Barbarians' team was to have played at Whakatami on August 0, but the Barbarians had been informed that the match was off and fit was now too late for them to arrange another match for that date. The drafting of a suitable reply to the Bay of Plenty Union's letter was left with the chairman and deputy-chairman. Another communication from the Bay of Plenty Union referred to the application for reinstatement lodged on behalf of C. Satherley. On the motion of Mr. L. Colgan it was decided to reply that the matter rested with the New Zealand Union. A letter was received from the Kaipara Sub-Union stating that a player named Tootsio Maihi had been suspended for the remainder of the 31)38 season. The union decided to ask for detailed information concerning the reasons for his suspension. When an application from the University Club to play the Combined Services at Blandford Park on August 2-1 was under discussion, Mr. L. Colgan inquired regarding the playing strength of the Services team and was informed that it would be a "tough proposition" and would probably include several representative players. Permission to arrange the fixture was granted, the chairman remarking that the union should support the University Club in its effort to strengthen its resources.

A letter was received from the St. John Ambulance Association explaining the circumstances surrounding the treatment given at Eden Park to an injured Manukau player named Pengelly. It was decided that the letter should be received and the St. John Ambulance Association informed that the explanation was considered satisfactory. , The chairman commented that the thorough inquiry made by the association into this particular incident was characteristic of its methods. "W® get TOO per cent service from the St. John Ambulance Association," he remarked.

It was stated that the subsidiary pennant competition for the senior division, to bo run on days when the representative team has matches, had been finalised by the match committee and the first scries would be started on Saturday next. An. offer of a match, Auckland Colts v. Hamilton, at Hamilton, on September 3 was accepted. It was stated that arrangements had been made :ror the Auckland Colts' team, which plays Kaipara next Saturday, to leave by bns from the union office at 12.30 p.m. on Saturday.

A vote of condolence was passed to the relatives of the late Messrs. George Bayly, Fred Lovelock and J. W. Smith. The chairman said he had heard it said of Mr. Bayly that he was the best threequarter who hail ever played in New Zealand. Mr. Lovelock had been a lifelong supporter of Auckland football, at Potter's Paddock in the old days and later at Eden Park, while Mr. Smith was a former member of the Manawatu Rugby Union.
