RIDE ON TRICYCLE

JOURNEY OF 3500 MILES ACCEPTANCE OF CHALLENGE [from our own correspondent] SYDNEY. July 7 Mr. Alfred Williamson, 45, of Melbourne, who recently rode the 575 miles from that city to Sydney in 9 days 23. hours on a child's tricycle, has accepted a challenge from a Sydney man to ride the 3500 miles from Fremantle, Western Australia, to Newcastle, New South Wales, on a similar machine within 100 days, for a wager of £IOO. "I shall begin my ride, the longest yet undertaken by a cyclist or a trieyclist, on September 15," Mr. Williamson said. "1 shall use a new tricycle, with a slightly larger pedal shaft, to enable a stronger thrust to be given while riding through the desert. In all other respects, it an-i 11 be of the same design as those used by children. For food. I shall rely upon milk, chocolate and white' meats. 1 expect to average 60 miles a day." The sponsor of tho ride has imposed three conditions. Mr. Williamson-must not place his feet on the ground to propel the .tricycle except in the desert, where ho may use one foot to do so. He must not alter the tricycle in any way to improve its speed, and he must pedal every day, whatever the Weather. Time will be allowed off only iu the event of illness.
