WRESTLER'S WIN

PREVIOUS CHAMPION DETTON DEFEATS MEEHAN FALL IN SEVENTH ROUND Dean Detton, former holder of the world's wrestling championship, gave a sample of his ability when he defeated Pat Median in an eight-rounds contest at the Town Hall on Saturday night. Although he won by only one fall, Detton was obviously the better man, the speed with which ho applied and countered holds exceeding anything previously witnessed in Auckland.

Detton's fall was obtained in the seventh round. Meehan commenced this with a series of forearm jolts, followed by flying tackles. However, he was quickly picked up and twirled round several times in an aeroplane spin before being slammed to the mat where his shoulders were easily pressed.

A large crowd witnessed the match, although the Town Hall was not filled. Meehan made a good showing and had the sympathy, of a large section of the spectators. This was no doubt duo to the fact that those present were aware that he was faced with powerful opposition, added to which Detton lost popularity through being warned several times by the referee for what that official considered to be illegalities. His frequent appeals to the referee also assisted to place Detton otfsido with many onlookers. Demonstration with Referee The former champion created amusement, combined with no little jeering, when he sometimes ran round the ring to avoid his opponent's elbow jolts. "Watch his. shoulders" was an oftrepeated exclamation of Detton's when he had Meehan fastened in different holds. The latter was responsible for some clever exhibitions of bridging at times and Detton's bouncing methods of endeavouring to force his opponent's shoulders to the mat met with the disapproval of the referee and the spectators.

Detton walked to the referee's corner during the interval between the third and fourth rounds and argued about the official's intervention when he considered himself to be in the right. This brought forth a further demonstration against him. Detton nearly won a fall in the fifth round by means of a bod'' scissors and arm bar . After Detton's fall in the seventh round he was content to allow matters to remain at that. Meehan was the aggressor, but Detton showed what a clever wrestler he is by the manner in which he countered and escaped from the various holds which were applied. Detton's weight was announced at lost. 31b. and that of Meehan 16s* 41b. Mr. J. McLean was referee. The Preliminaries
