GOODS TRANSPORT

CONTROL BY STATE

MORE ROAD SERVICES EXTENSION IN PROVINCE A considerable extension of State road transport goods services in Auckland will take place within the next two months. From to-day the Government will take over a small service operated by Mr. A. F. Ilicks between Auckland and Hamilton, and in a fortnight it will control Hjorth's services between Cambridge, Putaruru and Auckland. Other goods services soon to become State enterprises are Salter's, operating between Morrinsville, Mataniata and Auckland; Parsons', between To Awamutu and Auckland; Hilder's, between Otorohanga, To Ivuiti and Auckland, and Carter's, between lo Kuiti and Auckland. Both Hilder's and Carter's services will probably continue to operate privately several feeder routes contained in the area of their licences. The extension of State road services now decided upon will increaso the fleet of 33 now operating under tho Government to approximately 00, although with a co-ordination of services it is anticipated that there will bo a reduction of trucks actually in operation. Already some co-ordination has been possible with the three services now operating under tho State. These are the services previously operated by McClymont's Transport, Limited, between Hamilton and Auckland; Felton Waikato Transport, Limited, between Hamilton, Cambridge, Te Awamutu and Auckland; and Northern Transport, Limited, between Whangarei, Dargaville and Auckland.

Garages and premises formerly occupied by the companies are still being used, but not always independently. Administrative headquarters have been established at tho Felton Waikato Transport Company's former premises. Pending the incorporation of companies under the full programme, it seems unlikely that anything will be done in the direction of providing an extensive garage and office accommodation for all services, although it is believed that such provision is contemplated by the Railway Department.
