CHANGED POSTAL EATES DETAILS OF NEW SCALE COMMENCEMENT ON JULY 26 Some confusion is st.ited to exist in the public mind about the new overvsoas letter postage rates which will come into force in New Zealand as from July 26, when the inauguration of the British Empire air mail scheme will necessitate a revision of postal methods. To assist those who send letter mail overseas the Post and Telegraph Department has drawn up a complete schedule of rates to Lake the place of the present ones. A new ljd postage stamp, with the portrait of King George VI. as tho principal design, will also be on isstio as from July 26.

Following are tho ordinary postage rates on letters ouly addressed to countries beyond New Zealand as from this date:—

All British countries, including Egypt, but with the exception of Australia. —lid each lialf-ounce. Australia, New Guinea, Papua and Norfolk Islands.—ld each ounce until the inauguration of the Tasman air mail, when the rate will be increased to lid each half-ounce. Letters to Foreign Countries

All Foreign Countries. —2-} d for the first ounce and ljd for each additional ounce. This rate will apply to all those foreign countries, including tho United States, Hawaii, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Italy, Portugal, Rumania and Yugoslavia, to which the postage rate is at present Id, and to all other foreign countries as well. The postage rates on all articles other than letters remain unchanged. Tho present inland postage rates will also remain unchanged and will apply as in tho past to the Cook Islands and Western Samoa. However, letters for overseas countries, including Empire countries, for despatch by New Zealand internal air services must bo prepaid with Id an ounce in addition to the usual postage or the special air mail charge applicable to tho country concerned.

The existing special air rates will still be charged on letters for forwarding by air to foreign destinations, and to a few Empire destinations not served or fully served by the Empire air services. These special air rates apply to all British countries until August 2 if immediate air despatch beyond Australia is required. New Routes loi Mails Until the transtasman air service is started, all letters mails for Great Britain and Ireland, India. South Africa, Malaya and other Empire countries served by the Australia-England or England-South Africa air routes will be despatched by sea to Australia and sent on from thero by air as far as the servico permits. Letters from New Zealand for Canada and Newfoundland will be forwarded by £iir by way of Great Britain or by sea direct, depending upon the quicker despatch. The last despatch of letter mails by sea to the United Kingdom will be from Auckland on July 25, and the first despatch by air will leave Sydney on August 9 and arrive at London on August 19, one daj' after the last sea despatch. The connecting steamers for this air mail will leave Auckland on August 5 and Wellington on August 4.
