NEXT PRIME MINISTER

EARL BALDWIN'S VIEW MR. EDEN FAVOURED MUCH INTEREST CENTRED LONDON, July 15 Earl Baldwin, who, in spite of his retirement, remains one of the most powerful influences in British politics, has set the lobbies of Parliament buzzing, says the Australian Associated Press. It has now become known that he favours Mr. Anthony Eden to succeed Mr. Chamberlain when the latter retires from the Prime Ministership. The disclosure of this, fact, which is completely confirmed in London, appears in the American journal of worldwide standing, Foreign Affairs.

The article in Foreign Affairs referred to in the cablegram is by Mr. Victor Gordon Lennox, political correspondent of the London Daily Telegraph, and is entitled, "Anthony Eden." After tracing Mr. Eden's career to the point of his resignation, the writer savs: — "Mr. Eden is enjoying his freedom ancf apparently plans to take an active part in rallying the yputh of Britain to face whatever struggle may lie ahead. As these lines are written it is too early to say whether his future plans will lead him into actual collaboration with other accepted political leaders of public thought, such as Mr. Winston Churchill. Probably he is destined to remain out of office for some time to come. "Mr. Eden is not likely to accept any new appointment in a Chamberlain Government. But it is inevitable that he will 'come again,' if only because he is the natural representative of a generation into whose hands the control of public affairs must necessarily pass with the normal march of time. "Besides, Mr. Eden enjoys the personal backing of Earl Baldwin, still in his retirement a powerful figure in British Conservative circles. Lord Baldwin has rewritten his former political testament which named Sir Samuel Hoare as the next Conservative leader after Mr. Chamberlain. The name of Sir Samuel has been erased and that of Mr. Eden has been substituted."
