BUTTER QUIETER

STOCKS STILL RISING LARGE AMOUNT STORED STEADY CHEESE MARKET The London market for New Zealand butter closed last week with a quieter tone after some activity in the middle of the week. Salted was selling at 121s per c-wt., with an exceptional quotation of 1225, representing a drop of about 2s per cwt. 011 the week. The retail price of both New Zealand and Danish was unaltered at Is 3d per lb. Particularly heavy stocks of New Zealand butter are now being carried in London. The total amount in store lias risen from 4974 tons a week ago to the high level of 6375 tons, which is almost 1000 tons more than tho total a year ago. Continental stocks also are higher, but this is counteracted by a decline in stored stocks of Australian butter. The increase in stocks is shown by the estimate of the Imperial Economic Committee of 1,109,820 boxes in store, as against 949,813 boxes a year ago. According to a report of the committee the output of creamery butter in England and Wales, which had been reduced in previous months, has lately been showing a substantial increase. Production in Europe continues to increase and is generally higher than a year ago.

The cheese market is steady, with New Zealand white and coloured a shade higher at 68s 6d per cwt. Tho retail value is unaltered at 9d per lb. By arrangement with the Primary Products Marketing Department the New Zealand Dairy Board supplies the following information for the week ended July 9, figures for the previous week being given in parentheses:— Butter.—New Zealand, salted, 121s, extra 122s (1235); unsalted, 122s to I 123s (124s to 1255). GRADING IN BRITAIN SUGGESTION IN PARLIAMENT The Ministry of Agriculture should have a staff of butter graders, as in Australia, to enable British farmers to market standardised British butter, said Sir Dyke Acland (Liberal), during a brief debate in the House of Commons on the bill extending legislation to assist the milk industry for another year. He added that British butter should not be left to face the competition of graded Empire butter. THE CITY MARKETS POOR DEMAND FOR FRUIT VEGETABLE SUPPLIES SHORT A largo quantfty of cooking apples came forward at the City 'Markets yesterday and met with a fair demand, but dessert apples were slow of sale. There was a good inquiry for hothouse tomatoes and for hothouse grapes, supplies for the latter being short. The demand for oranges was only fair, while lemons were hard to dispose of. The demand for all other lines of fruit was poor.

. Owing to the heavy rain on Monday the market was not heavily supplied with vegetables, although good quantities of cabbages and cauliflowers were available, selling at recent rates. High prices were realised for spinach and silver l>eet, which were very scarce. Good supplies of Island kumaras should be available after the arrival of the Matua from the Islands to-day.
