HOUSING SHORTAGE
PROBLEM IN HAMILTON CLAIM FOR POSSESSION DIFFICULTIES OF OCCUPIER [from our own- correspondent] HAMILTON, Tuesday Evidence of the difficulty in securing housing accommodation in Hamilton was given in the Magistrate's Court to-day, when Isobella Bain, a married woman (Mr. 11. M. Hammond) nought the possession of a house in Norton Road from Edward Phillips Baty, a school teacher, of Frankton, for whom the inspector of factories. Mr. E. A. Wood, appeared. Plaintiff said that she and her husband, who was an invalid, occupied one room in a house. There were 12 other people in the house. She and her husband had only an invalidity pension of 30s a week to support them, there being practically no profit above outgoings on the rent received for her own house. If she obtained possession, she could let part of the house and thus supplement her income. Her landlady wanted possession of the room she and her husband occupied, for sho could get more for it than the lis 6d a week plaintiff paid. Defendant said he had every sympathy with plaintiff and her difficulties. He had done Lis best to secure a house, but had been unsuccessful. He had been promised one next month. The magistrate, Mr. S. L. Paterson, adjourned the case for a month to enable defendant to secure a house.
