DR. R. J, MANION CHtiSEN CANADIAN CONVENTION OTTAWA, Jnly 7 It is announced that Dr. R. J. Manion, a war veteran doctor, was chosen in a second ballot at the Conservative Party convention to succeed Mr. It. B. Bennett as leader. Dr. Manion is an advocate of moderate tariffs, and greater defence by Imperial co-operation. Previously, Mr. Bennett had refused Ji strong demand that he should continue as leader. Mr. W. D. Herridge, a brother-in-law of Mr. Bennett, created a storm after his monetary reform resolutions had been rejected. Ho said the whole convention was "a lot of bunk" and reactionary controlled. He was howled down with shouts of "Jeremiah."

Dr. Manion, who is aged 57, graduated in medicine at Toronto University in 1904 and continued his studies at Edinburgh.- He practised medicine until 1915, when he left for France. He first served with tho French Army and in 1916 and 1917 was with tho Canadians. Upon returning to Canada in 1917, Br. Manion was elected a member of tho House of Commons. Ho was a member of the Cabinet at three different periods. From 1930 to 1935 he was Minister of Railways.
