To make his central character a 70-year-old man is a new departure for a novelist, but in ''Rich Man, Poor Man," Richard Starr takes this step with very satisfactory results. John Loreton, an aged millionaire, sets out to discover how many genuine friendships he would have if lie were penniless. Most of his doubts with regard to the sincerity of people in (lose touch with his wealth are confirmed, but in his travels the old man finds moments of great happiness that his money has never been able to buy.
