MEASLES CASES
WELLINGTON DEATHS A MORE SERIOUS TYPE NO SCHOOLS YET CLOSED [by telegraph—own correspondent] WELLINGTON, Wednesday The measles epidemic in Wellington shows no signs of abating and three or four deaths have occurred. No schools have actually beep closed, but in a number of cases during the past few weeks the attendances have been seriously affected. Ihe outbreak began at Miramar, but the centres most seriously affected are now Island Bay and the Hutt Valley.
I)r. F. S. McLean, medical officer of health, said that although the epidemic had begun with cases chiefly of the minor type, more serious cases were now being reported where complications had occurred. "One case has come to the notice of the department where a child was allowed to run round on the street with a high temperature and a rash," added Dr. McLean. "This is to be strongly condemned, because of the risk of, complications, particularly pneumonia."
PATIENTS IN WHANGAREI BUGBY UNION'S DECISION [from our own correspondent] WHANG AREI, Wednesday The measles epidemic in the Whangarci district is still seriously affecting the attendances at the schools. As so many junior football players are affected the Whangarei Rugby Union has been forced to abandon the fourth and fifth grade competitions for next Saturday. Other winter ailments are also taking their toll, and one school in the district has had to close on account of the number of children away with whooping cough.
