VALUES IN WAIKATO

MARKETS RATHER DULL POOR DEMAND FOR BEEF DAIRY CATTLE BUOYANT Business in most tho trade is particularly quiet for the time of the year. The fat cattle market, which has shown an easier trend during the last four weeks, gives no indication of firming, and the general opinion is that there will he no marked improvement for at least another month or six weeks. v

As a result of the dull state of th<* beef market, store cattle are becoming increasingly difficult to. trade. Gra/.icrs are attempting to hold their fat cattle until prices rise, and meantime little interest is displayed in offerings of stores.

"With prices for fat sheep showing no improvement, sales of store wethers, which have been offered at several Waikato centres recently, have been rather disappointing. Prices almost without exception arc below thoso ruling for the same class of sheep in February. At the winter sheep fair held at To Kuiti on Friday wethers, poor quality hoggets and aged ewes were hard to quit, but well-known lines of genuinely-farmed ewes elicited keen competition and made prices that were satisfactory, although below those of last year. At the same centre last year a particularly bright sale resulted, but this year buyers did not display the same confidence and bidding, except on good lines, was rather ! restricted. The market for fat pigs apd good quality dairy cattle continues buoyant. Quite a number of clearing sales havs been held during the past week and, although values for quality, cattle hare remained at previous levels, there has been an easing for backward and inferior sorts. Conditions in the various sections are as follows; BEEF ■ Lighter entries have done little to improve the tone of the market. At the Prankton sale on Tuesday ox beef was penned in better numbers, but the yarding of cow beef was the smallest seen at this centre for a Jong: time, only a few pens being on offer In spite of the fact that the quality of the ox beef was generally good, and included a fair proportion of well-finished medium-weight cattle, bidding was rather restricted and values showed no improvement, choice ox was quoted up to 35s per 1001b; (prime ox, 30s to 345; secondary and pain, 22s to 275; prime cows, 23s to 27splain, ISs to 225. MUTTON Yardings of mutton at outside sales do not contain anything outstanding and consequently prices do not usually exceed 28s for wethers. At the Frankton yards on Tuesday there was a fuli entry, which included the usual number of light and unfinished sheep. \\ ell-finished wethers were in demand and sold at rates equal to those of last week. Inferior sorts were again hard to quit rat lambs were penned in fair numbers and met with a slightly keener demand. Current quotations are:—Heavy prime fat wethers, 29s Gd to 32s Gd; prime, 27s Gd to 295; light, 25s to 275; unfinished, 22s to 245; heavy fat, ewes, 18s Gd to 21s; medium, 10s to 17s Gd; fat lambs, ISs (3d to 23s Gd. PIGS Fat pigs are coming forward in only small numbers; in many cases the supply is only sufficient for local demands. Competition for the number available is keen and prices, especially for porkers, • have advanced. The inquiry for stores has set in earlier than usual this season, and hero again values tf nd to firm. Good breeding sows are especially keenly sought and young well-bred sows, close to farrowing make" from £5 to £7. Porkers make 35s to £3 3s; baconers, £3 Cs to £3 19s. STORTFORD LODGE VALUES [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION"] HASTINGS, Wednesday Although there was 'a fairly good attendance at the Stortford Lodge stock gale price« did not come np to last week's level. Prica reductions were especially noticeable In the store sheep section, for which there were 8000 offering, about 700 sheep being dropped ont altogether at the beginning of the sale. Prices on sheep showed an average fall of about 2s. Cattle, although not showing last week's figures, brought a reasonable price. Only a few pens of steers, light chillers, that were not quite ready, were passed. • Top pric«a wnged from £9 to £lO 10s for com. and heifers from £8 10s to £9 17s Gd. The chief entries of ox beef realised £ll ss. Fat sheep ranged from ISs Gd to 19s 6d. •,
