"DEAD END"
TENSE DRAMA FOR EMBASSY "Dead End," the screen adaptation of a play which ran" for two years in New York, will commence a season at the Embassy Theatre to-day. .The squalid slums of New York, where vice and crime are frequent, are the settings for this outstanding production, which gives a grim ? realistic picture of life in poverty-stricken areas in the great American city. Magnificent acting by the principal players, Joel McCrea, Sylvia Sidney and Humphrey Bogart, and an absorbing story, make this film one of the most powerful dramaS'to be Been in Auckland for some time. In the role of the poor architect •who falls in love with a wealthy girl, McCrea gives an outstanding portrayal and is well supported by Sylvia Sidney, as the courageous poor girl who finally marries the architect. Humphrey Bogart gives one of the best performances of his career in the role of the ruthless gangster who, by a strange sentimental streak, returns to his homo in the slums to visit his m6ther and his ' former .sweetheart. The story is brought to a thrilling conclusion with a battle between gangsters from the slums and the police. The strong supporting cast includes such accomplished players as Wendy Barrio, Claire Trevor and Allen Jenkins, while remarkable performances are given by the slum children. In addition to the main film an entertaining associate programme will also be presented.'
