MOTOR TAXATION
USE FOR HIGHWAYS ONLY CANTERBURY MOVEMENT [by telegraph—PßESS association] CHRISTCILURCH. Wednesday As a first step in what is hoped will be a concerted effort to have motor taxation devoted wholly to highway purposes, the Canterbury Progress League called a conference this morning. "I believe that if a united effort throughout ISew Zealand was undertaken it would succeed." said Mr. F Loop, the chairman. The move, he added, was not a political one. A report presented by tho league stated that tho grand total of all motor taxation in 1936-37, including customs and spirit taxes, was £5.340,000, of which only £2,756,000 had been used tor highway purposes. All local bodies, members of Parliament and others interested are to be approached 011 tho matter.
