SAVED BY RAIN

AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN DRAW WITH YORKSHIRE BAD LUCK FOE COUNTY IN WINNING POSITION By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright LONDON, July 5 Rain forced a draw in the cricket match between Australia and Yorkshire at Sheffield to-day, with the county in a winning position. Yorkshire scored 205 in the first innings in reply to Australia's 222, and dismissed the visitors for 132 in their second venture. Requiring 150 runs in the second innings to win, the county had made 83 for three wickets at the lunch adjournment. Heavy rain continued through lunch and there were intermittent showers in the afternoon. After three inspections of the wicket the captains decided to abandon play and the match was drawn. Sutcliffe and Barber were batting confidently at lunch when Yorkshire needed only 67 runs to win with seven wickets in hand. It is generally agreed that the rain almost certainly saved Australia from defeat. THIRD TEST MATCH OMISSION OF BOWES SELECTORS' REASON PUZZLES VERITY MAY NOT PLAY (Received July 6, 7.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 5 In view of the agitation for the inclusion of Bowes in England's team in the third test match after his success against the Australians in the Yorkshire match, the selectors say they had received an intimation that he would not be fit to play in the test because of a knee disability. Consequently he was not considered.

The selectors' statement has puzzled Bowes, who told a representative of the News Chronicle that he feels as well

as ever. He had a small swelling in the knee at the beginning of the season, but he is not receiving regular medical treatment. Verity has informed the selectors that he may not be able to play in thp third test owing to aggravated fibrosis behind his left shoulder, which makes the turning of his arm difficult.

WOOLLEY TO RETIRE PLAYING HIS LAST SEASON (Received July 6, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 5 Frank Woolley, of the Kent county club, is playing his farewell season in first-class cricket. He will captain the Players versus the Gentlemen at Lord's on July 13.
