FIRST DAY AT TRENTHAM

SEVERAL LARGE DIVIDENDS FOUR RACES TO EACH ISLAND Good dividends were a feature of the racing at Trentham yesterday, when nearly all the winners and place-getters made their supporters a fine return. No fewer than five horses—Great Pal, Matoru, Erination, Arctic King and Chaste, the last-named for a place—paid double figures, and the best return was that of Matoru, who was not in strong favour for the Stewards* Handicap, in spite of the fact that he made a return to winning form at Marton, only as recently as last Saturday. Honours were evenly divided among South and North Island horses. Flashlight, Great Pal, The Wrecker and Valarth won for the South and Erination, Matoru, Full of Scotch and Arctic King for the North. The Wellington Steeplechase was won by the good performer, Erination, who was one of the early fancies, but went out of favour as a result of erratic schooling after his arrival at Trentham. Starting only seventh fancy in the field of ten, Erination gave a polished exhibition. He and Full of Scotch, who deepened the good impression he created by three successive wins at Ellerslie last month, were the only Aucklanders to win, although Jan Ridd, El Meynell and Prince Acre ran second.
