POOR BATTING

DERBYSHIRE ELEVEN . ALL OUT FOR 151 RUNS V -• - - f AUSTRALIA'S LEAD BROWN 169 NOT OUT By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received July 1, 12.55 a.m.) LONDON, June 30 Continuing their first innings against Derbyshire at Chesterfield this morning, the Australians had made 330 runs for three wickets at the luncheon adjournment, in reply to the county's first-innings score of 151 runs. When stumps were drawn yesterday the Australians had lost one wicket for 191, the not-out batsmen being Brown (104,) and Badcock (59). The county batsmen made a poor display in their first innings yesterday. After losing three wickets for 24, Derbyshire were showing signs of recovery when a beautiful ball from O'Reilly lifted G. Pope's off-bail. The total was then 71, after which wickets fell at regular intervals. Worthington played a fighting innings for 67 in 135 minutes. Ho hit nine fours, and set; an example of soundness and the use of the feet which none of the others followed. ■ Ward was flighting the ball in a strong wind, and baffled the batsmen, and the county was out after 165 minutes. It was a feeble display against bowling which was no more than ordinarily good. l ' Australia opened at 3.10 p.m. to t'he bowling of Copson, reputed to be oitie of the most dangerous bowlers in England. and Alfred Pope, who is 6ft. 4in. in height and a medium-fast bowler. Brown and Finglcton made only 13 in the first against accurate bowling. Fingleton, aft&'a tedious display, was bowled middle stump. Badcock was badly beaten by Mitchell's next ball, but an appeal for leg before was unsuccessful. Brown and Badcock then scored all round the wicket, and maintained a good rate until stumps were drawn. * Brown reached his century in 180 minutes. He gave chances at seven and 50. Badcock had batted for 115 minutes at stumps. The weather was dull at the resumption to-day. Badcock opened with two fours. Play was stopped by rain between 11.35 and 11.55 a.m., and off the first ball after the resumption Badcock, when he had made 69, was missed at first slip off Pope. It was a difficult, high right-hand catch. Brown meanwhile continued on his placid way. Oh reaching 80, Badcock became extremely quiet and was out leg-before while playing defensively. He had hit 10 fours; McCabe, opening brightly, lasted only five minutes. Trying a glance, he was caught at the wicket on the leg side. Barnes came in for his first innings in England. Barnes lost no time in playing forcing strokes, ..and reached ,17 in 20 v minutes. Brown, at 134, had his third escape, Alfred Pope dropping a catch at fiue leg off his brother's bowling. Brown reached 150 in 265 minutes. Details of the scores are:— DERBYSHIRE—'-First Innings Smith, b Waite . . . . . . . . 0 Alderman, lbw, b Waite .... 8 Townsend, c and b Ward , . ..
