INSTITUTE AFFAIRS

New Lynn.—There was a large attendance of members and their friends at the monthly meeting. The president, Mrs. Stacev, gave a talk on a visit she had paid to Sydney. The results of the competitions were:—Toys, Mrs. W. Savage, 1, Mrs. Briekley, 2, Mrs. Teed, 3; tarts, Mrs. Teed, 1, Mrs. Webrei, 2, Mrs. Stacey, 3. The hostesses for the day were Mesdames Abbott, Teed. Armstead, Brims and Ardern. Matamata.—At the monthly meetin}; of the institute Mrs. G. Stewart presided, and Mrs. G. G. Griffiths gave a talk on the Anzac trip to Australia. Good business was done at the sales table, the proceeds being put toward the expenses fund of the delegates to the Wellington conference. The results of the points competitions were as follows:—Knitted bedsocks, Mrs. It. A. Hnwos, 1; Mrs. J. Webster, 2: Mrs. G. Stewart. .'3. Shortbread: Mrs. S. Ellery, 1; Mrs. F. Mateer, 2; Mrs. H. Lowry, 3. Best bloom: Mrs. G. Stewart, 1; Mrs. C. Taylor, 2; Mrs. S. Ellery, 3. Puriri.—At the monthly meeting a talk on the Solomon Islands was given. The monthly competition was won by Mrs. Frisker. Kihikihi. —Mrs. Harre presided at the monthly meeting. Items were given by Mesdames Middlebrook, McCread.v, Skinner and Meßain, all visitors from To Awamutu. Members of tho Kihikihi institute presented a short plav. There was an exhibition of arts and crafts and a bring-and-buy stall. A competition was won by Mrs. Helwig. Paparoa.—The monthly meeting of the Paparoa Women's Institute opened with community singing. Mrs. Hay was elected president. It was decided to form a link with tho Maori Women's Institutes in the North. The competition was won by Mrs. E. A, Fenwick. The hostesses for the day were Mesdames Arroll mid Mcßreen. Waitakaruru. —A drama school was held by Mrs. Judith Terry at the monthly meeting, and mimes were acted by the members. A demonstration of stage make-up was also given, and was attended by the older girls from the local school. The following members were appointed to lie the committee of the garden circle: —Mesdames Douglas, Aitkenhead and A. Coxhead. The hostesses for the day, Mesdames Coxhead, Kvans and Godkin, provided lunch. Auckland. —There was a record attendance of members and several officers from country institutes at the fifth birthday celebrations of the Auckland centre of the Women's Institutes. Tho president, Mrs. Neal, was in the chair. The birthday cake was cut, and each visitor was given a shoulder sprav. Mrs. Cassidy, J P., read letters from the link in Kent. A musical programme was presented and community singing was enjoyed, after which a short play was presented. Afternoon tea brought the meeting to a close.
