QUEENSLAND WINS
RUGBY LEAGUE MATCH NEW ZEALANDEKS IMPROVE GREAT TRY BY J. SMITH (Received June 2G, 5.5 p.m.) BRISBANE, June 20 After leading Queensland by -12 points to 8 in the first half yesterday, in which its backs were brilliant and far more impressive than on thfe previous Saturday, the New Zealand Rugby League team tired in the second spell. Its tackling fell away and it was defeated by 21 points to 12. | The display of the New Zealanders * pleased a crowd of 6000, which was much smaller than that for the first match. Brown at times was brilliant on the wing and scored a good try. Smith, the fullback, however, eclipsed all other scoring efforts with a tricky ruu through the defence after fielding a punt at inidfield. He received a greab ovation as not a defender laid a hand on him. He tackled splendidly all day and held his own with Whittle, the Kangaroo fullback. Kay and Hemi played excellent football, but Tittleton did the most effective job in holding Reardon, who was unable except once to break through dangerously. When he did a try came to Queensland.
Orman broke practically even in the scrums, but in the first half the New Zealanders were penalised three to one for breaches, mostly offside. If Queensland had had Hemi as a kicker the errors would have been costly. Scorers for New Zealand w£te Brown and Smith a try each. Hemi kicked three goals, two from near halfway. Cooper (2), Reardon, Rvrie and Collins scored tries for Queensland. Gilbert converted two and kicked a penalty goal. Midgley, Wilfred Brimble and Anderson, were omittgd from the New Zealand team. The Queensland side was not changed. The New Zealand team to date has played six matches, won three and lost three. Results are as follows:—NewSouth Wales, lost 12 —25; New South Wales, won 37—18; Country Centre, won 23—2; Queensland, lost 11—31; Toowoomba, won 12—11; Queensland, lost 12—21. New Zealand has scored 107 points and has 108 registered against it. The next match will be against a Country Centre on Wednesday. TEAM OF SPORTSMEN VALUABLE EXPERIENCE (Received June 26, 5.5 p.m.) BRISBANE, Jane 26 The New Zealanders will leave Brisbane to-day assured that when they return in future years they will be most welcome because they are a fine body of sportsmen who although they lost yesterday were certainly not disgraced. Experienced coaching will ensure that they will hold their own with Australian teams in the near future. " The tour has been an education to us," said Mr. J. A. Redwood, the manager of the team. "It will mean a better standard of play when the knowledge we have gained is handed on to our players at home."
