CITY BY-ELECTION

TWO CANDIDATES CITIZENS AND LABOUR ARRANGEMENTS FOR POLL No further candidates were forthcoming when nominations for the vacancy on the Auckland City Council closed at noon yesterday. Consequently the by-election, to be held on Wednesday, July 6, will be a straight-out contest between nominees of the Citizens and Ratepayers' Association and the Labour Party. _ The candidates are Mr. Charles Bailey, a former member of the City Council and chairman of the Public Services Committee, who was chosen by the Labour Representation Committee as the official Labour candidate, and Mr. H. J. Butcher, who has been sponsored by the Citizens' Association. Mr. Bailey was nominated by Mrs. Doris Stuart Bailey and Mr. John James, while Mr. Butcher's nomination paper was signed bv Messrs. W. R. Fee and J. 8.. Donald. Both were candidates at the City Council election in May of this year, when Mr. Butcher was fourth on the list of unsuccessful candidates with 17,211 votes, and Mr. Bailey was four places lower with 14,239 votes. Arrangements are now beinjg made for the election. There will be about 35 polling places instead of the 52 in use for the main election, while a staff ot about 90 deputy-returning' officers and poll clerks will suffice to handle the poll and the counting of the votes.-
