FIERCE COTTAGE FIRE

CENTENARIAN RESCUED A man, aged 101, was rescued from o fierce fire which badly damaged two adjoining cottages at Cuffley, Hertfordshire, last month. The outbreak started in tbe thatched roof of one and spread to the other. Mr. John Fortnum, the centenarian, was carried from one of the cottages by neighbours. He lived with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lamb. Mrs. Anderson, who lived next door with her husband and 10-year-old daughter was ill, and was brought out in a blanket. On his 100 th birthday, on April 19 last year, Mr. Fortnum received greetings from the King and Queen, and he had a parcel of cakes from his native town, Banbi;ry, Oxfordshire. At the Inst general election he walked to the polling station.
