LOCAL DAIRY PRODUCE PRICE

Sir. —Your correspondent "Ex Director," surely makes a very tame introduction to a weak argument in quoting Mr. C. E. Macmillan's letter at a previous date, since more than one letter in reply pointed out that this was based for its main contention on an exploded hypothesis. Apparently the burden of "ExDirector's" plaint is that Mr. Macmillan is justified in condemning fixed local prices for butter as being inimical to the producers' interests, and that therefore he, himself, isejustified in protesting against the local cheese prices because they are not so fixed. This reads like wanting to have it both ways. As far as London parity is concerned, the multiple stores in England are retailing New Zealand cheese across the counter at a price much below that at which the local consumer can purchase it here. Nor would the exchange difference bridge the gap. The serpent in the visionary paradise of the Pacific is high cost of living. E.S.C.
