SHEEP-STEALING CASE

FINES OF £lO IMPOSED [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] OPOTIKI, Friday A charge of stealing a sfieep, the property of the Native Department, was preferred against Edward Kelly in the Opotiki Police Court this morning. Accused pleaded guilty. Sergeant J. Isbister, who prosecuted, said that for a considerable time sheep had been missed from the Opotiki saleyards. On June 20 a drover who was driving a large mob to'Hotorua left about 40 sheep, which were suffering from sore feet, in the saleyards. One, which was blind, was put in a paddock opposite the yards. Next morning it was missing. Accused later admitted that he stole the sheep from the paddock. Kelly was convicted and fined £lO, in default one month's imprisonment. Arising out of the same case Hilton Crosswell .was also charged with stealing a sheep. Accused said he would plead guilty to killing the sheep only. Sergeant Isbister said that nccused had been employed by Kelly to kill the sheep. He had said that he had killed HO sheep for Kelly previously. Accused was convicted and fined £lO. in default one month's imprisonment.
