TIMBER RESOURCES

POVERTY BAY ANXIETY AFFORESTATION SUGGESTED [by telegraph—own correspondent] GISBORNE, "Wednesday The serious position arising out of a shortage of milling timber in Gisborne was pointed out by Mr. S. T. Gray at the quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to-day. "The position is very serious, and the present supply can last only for about 10 or 12 years," said Mr. Gray. "After that we do not know what will happen. The Government has plantations in various parts of the country, but they are well out of the Poverty Bay district, and I am strongly in favour of the establishment of an afforestation area in the district as soon as possible." Members were of the opinion that the problem was very serious, and a joint move embracing the interested bodies shoidd be made. It was felt that the matter should be given more serious thought, and it was deferred the next meeting of the phamber.
