SERVICES TO FIJI
SIR MAYNARD HEDSTROM ———_- ADDRESS TO BE PRESENTED [from our own correspondent] ' SUVA, June 17 . -It is intended to present to Sir Alaynard Hedstrom when he visits Levuka shortly, an illuminated address from the electors of the eastern division and the citizens of Levuka, in recognition of his services to the division extending over nearly 30 years.
Bir Maynard was first elected to the Legislative Council as representative of the old capital of Levuka in 1908, and Held his position, which later was merged iuto that of the eastern division of the colony, until early this year, when he resigned in consequence of a remark made in the Council by the Governor, Sir Arthur Richards. During a debate His Excellency referred to ''that archaic trinity, Sir Maynard Hedstrora, Sir Henry Marks and Sir Henry Scott." Sir Maynard ft as absent from the colony at the time, but immediately on his return requested the Governor to take such steps as were necessary to remove the impression created by the publication of this report. His Excellency claimed that the sords did not carry "the meaning imputed to them by Sir Maynard, and declined to take any action. As a result Sir Maynard resigned his position on the Legislative Council and the Executive Council and requested that copies of the, correspondence be forwarded to the Secretary of State for the Colonies. Sir Maynard was a member, of the Executive Council from 3917 to the time of his retirement.
