REMARKABLE ESCAPE
YAN FALLS OYER BANS DRIVER FOUND UNINJURED NO DAMAGE TO VEHICLE [BY TELEGBAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT] GREYMOUTH, Wednesday A remarkable escape from serious injury ocdurred when Mr. James Fitzgerald, •of Wainihinihi, 26 miles from Hokitika, was on his way from Otira to his home in a delivery van. Mr. Fitzgerald stopped the vehicle and left it on the road while he was engaged in conversation with men employed in the construction of the Arthur's Pass-Arahura power transmission line. There were heavy gusts of wind blowing at the time, and during one of these Mr. Fitzgerald observed the van moving. Running toward the vehicle, he was a bio to jump into tho seat just before it moved off at a fairly rapid pace. Before Mr. Fitzgerald could get it under control, the van left the road and crashed over a perpendicular bank about 40ft. high. On seeing the van \ disappear, the men rushed to the spot expecting to find Mr. Fitzgerald seriously injured. He was found, however, still sitting in the driver's seat and suffering only from slight shock. The vehicle was in no way damaged. It was later hauled to tho road and the journey was continued.
