HEAVY DEFEAT

KUGBY LEAGUE TEAM dominion side outclassed MATCH WITH QUEENSLAND HEMI'S GREAT KICKING By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received June 19, 5.5 p.m.) BRISBANE, June 19 After leading by 15 points to six at halftime, Queensland defeated the New Zealand Rugby League team to-day by 31 points to 11. Queensland scored seven tries and New Zealand one. Hemi, the New Zealand fullback, was in great kicking form. He kicked four goals, one being a magnificent effort from 10 yards outside halfway. New Zealand was overwhelmed by the Queensland forwards and speedy backs and was not in the picture toward the end of the game. The New Zealand tackling was weak, players holding off the man with the ball. The teams were as follows:QUEENSLAND Fullback.—Whittle. Threequarters. Bates, Melrose, Wright, Cooper. Five-eighths.—Reardon. Halfback. —Gilbert. Forwards. —Little, Dickson, Hitching, Pyrie, Heidke, Collins. NEW ZEALAND Fullback.—J. Hemi. Threequarters.—R. Brown, R. Chase, W. Tittleton, J. Smith. Five-eighths.—Walter Brimble. Halfback. —Wilfred Brimble. Forwards. —J. Cootes, G. Orman, J. Brodrick, J. McLeod, W. McNeight, H. Tetley. Possession from Scrums Beaten 43 times to 21 for the ball in the scrums, New Zealand never had a chance. For a while the forwards, led by McNeight and Brodrick, held their own. They were simply overwhelmed in the closing stages. Although favoured by a breeze in the first half, New Zealand was behind 15 —6 at the interval. In the second half the visitors could not cope with the brilliance of the Queensland backs, who did what they liked. The fact that Queensland scored seven tries to one was evidence enough of New Zealand's inferiority, which arose chiefly from the reluctance of its players to tackle. The only redeeming feature was the magnificent kicking of Hemi, at fullback, who had the crowd of 15,000 on its feet in the early play, when he kicked a penalty from ten yards beyond halfway. He finished by scoring eight of the 11 points scored by the New Zealanders and hopelessly outplayed Whittle, the Kangaroo fullback, during the whole game.

J. HEMI Queensland excelled in the cover defence, which was the reason why many attacks which originated from Brimble, halfback, came to naught. Brodrick and McNeight valiantly tried to stem the rush of the Queenslanders during the second half, but they were handicapped by lack of support. New Zealand was forced purely on a defensive game by lack of the ball from the scrums, Orman being unable to beat the opposing hooker, Dickson, who was aided by a liberal interpretation of the scrummage laws by the referee. Two Players Injured Tetley was injured for a few minutes during the second half and Brimble, halfback, was incapacitated by an illegal tackle when he did not have the ball. This, however, does not account for the scores which really were due to the failure of the New Zealanders to tackle the man with the ball. Tittleton made a few openings and was backed up by Chase, but lack of support ruined his efforts when tries might have resulted. The New Zealand team to date has played four matches, won two and lost two. Results are as follows:—New South Wales, lost 12—25; New South Wales, won 37—18; Country Centre, won 23—2; Queensland, lost 11—31. The next match will be against Toowoomba, at Toowoomba, on Wednesday.
