ORANGES ON BEACHES

REMOVING ROTTING FRUIT WORK OF CLEARING BEGUN A start was made yesterday with removing the large quantities of decaying oranges washed ashore in the region of Brown's Bay. -A quantity of inferior Rarotongan oranges was dumped outside tho harbour limits last Tuesday, but apparently both the wind and tide combined to wash much of tho fruit ashore. The bulk of the fruit was washed up on Brown's Bay and Torbay and as high tides and heavy seas carried it well up the beaches it is unlikely that it will be carried away again by the sea. Tho beaches were inspected on Thursday by Mr. L. O'Donnell, riding foreman of the Waitemata County Council, and yesterday council employees were at work burying the decaying fruit at Brown's Bay. This beach has been practically cleared and if the oranges are not removed by the sea in tho meantime similar work will be carried out at Torbay. Tho Waitemata County clerk, Mr. C. A. Cawkwell, stated yesterday that there had been no trouble of this nature on the North Shore for a considerable time.
