SCHOOL ATHLETES

PRIMARY ASSOCIATION PRESENTATION OF PRIZES THREE HUES TO PAPATOETOE j Congratulations to the Auckland Primary Schools' Amateur Athletic Association on the -work it was doing and on the phenomenal results it had achieved were extended by Captain R. S. Judson, V.C., when speaking yesterday afternoon at a function held in the Town Hall concert chamber for the presentation of trophies won at the association's annual sports meeting recently. The trophies were distributed by Captain Judson, on behalf of the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, who was absent from Auckland. Having received from the youngest championship winner, Beverley Lincoln, of the Papatoetoe School, a bouquet for Lady Davis, Captain Judson expressed the keen disappointment of the Mayor and Mayoress at being unable to attend. The president of the association, Mr. A. Bullians, who welcomed Captain Judson, said that- it was an important occasion in the association's history, as it was the first on which winners - were all assembled together t-o receive their prizes. The association appreciated the Mayor's kindness in granting the use of the hall. Mr. Bullians added that the association did not try to train cham- t pionj. Its aim was to have as many children as possible enjoying a day of active sport. Captain Judson said that he knew the children did not take part in the sports for the sake of gaining prizes. They took part for the joy of competing and of playing the game. He drew attention to the fact that all three inter-school competitions had been won by the Papatooloe School, this being the first time in the association s history that one school had annexed all three championships. To this school he extended his warmest congratulations. Continuing, lie said that the association was fostering the nursery of amateur athletics. He impressed on the children that effort and not success demanded recognition in life.
