WAITOMO COUNTY

ROAD WORK PROPOSALS CLIFTON BOUNDARY PROBLEM [BT TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT J TE KUITI, Friday The schedule of estimates for public works in the Waitomo County forwarded to the district engineer provides for amounts to be revoted totalling '£.781/, of which £975 has been contributed by the settlers and the county. The county engineer, Mr. R. H. Browne, reported to the council meeting to-day that new works had been submitted amounting to approximately £'6loo. An endeavour had been made to adhere to the order of urgency accordance with the five-year plan. The schedule submitted to the Alain Highways Board contains proposals for a total expenditure of £12,240 for the maintenance of 170 miles of highways under the control of the county. A letter was received from the Clifton County Council objecting to she proposal to transfer the Mokaxi River settlers from the Clifton county to the Waitomo county. Clifton pointed out that the centre of interest of this area lay with Waitara and New Plymouth and that the declared access was the Mokau River. The Waitomo council had held that the real access lay over Awakino riding roads and then by punt across the river. It was decided that the Clifton resolution be forwarded to the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, asking that a commission be set up to settle the question. Mr. J. K. Black, the Awakino riding member, presented resolutions from a meeting of Awakino settlers opposing any move to transfer the Awakino riaingto the Clifton county and agreeing to the inclusion of the Mokau River settlers in the Awakino riding.
