RIMUTAKA TUNNEL

Sir,—Heading an extract in Thursday's issue of the Herald, there seems to be a great opinion in your paper that the proposed tunnel to be "pinched" through the Kimutakas is a "hasty project" on Mr. Savage's part. I may state this undertaking is many moons overdue; in fact, many years ago a few of the wealthy lower valley farmers were organising to put a "hole" through the Wainuioniata Hills and out to the lake. It is high time the line from "Summit" to Cross' Creek was scrapped. Brought up on the coast a, few miles from Carterton, v I know the country well, the railway and the road. Many times I have traversed it in my young days. A tunnel is not only going to serve the Wairarapa folks. It will be an asset to Napier and Gisborne, a duplicate route to Auckland, and a strategic move in wartime, thus being able to move men and food on both coasts of the North Island. CoXNAUGHT.
