MINISTER'S ESCAPE
AEROPLANE FORCED DOWN LANDING IN MOUNTAINS "CRASH SEEMED INEVITABLE" CANBERRA. Jane 10 The Minister of Defence, Mr. H. V. Thorby, his secretary, Miss Kathleen Lyndon, and threo other occupants of a Royal Air Force Avro-Anson bomber had a remarkable escape from disaster in a forced landing in mountainous countiV about 80 miles east of Albury,
The pilot, Flight-Lieutenant Durant, brought the machine down on a small level area in the mountains, when a crash seemed inevitable. The aeroplane had been flying blind through sleet and dense fog.
Twenty minutes before the landing, Mr. Thorby and the others were told to don their parachutes. "When we found the area," said Mr. Thorby, "the chances of our escaping a crash seemed 1000 to 1 against. Twice in" the half-hour that we were in serious difficulties we narrowly missed crashing into the mountains,"
