Academy Award Disclaimed
SPENCER TRACY'S OPINION
Spencer Tracy, who won the Academy award for the best performance by an actor in 1937, said that Freddie Bartholomew should have been given the prize. Tracy declares that without the help of Freddie he would not have registered so high in "Captains Courageous" as he did.
"Freddie is a marvellous kid, and he can give lessons in acting to anybody in town," Tracy said. "If the kids had been given a chance —and I think provision should be made for them as well as the adult actors — my vote would have gone to Freddie, and I believe thousands of others would have voted the same way. Perhaps by next year they will be able to give the kids a real chance to share in the glory."
