SALES OF WOOL

I DECREASE OVER LAST YEAR . TOTAL DOWN BY 47,872 BALES A decline of 47,872 bales in the quantity of wool sold in the Dominion for the 11 months ended May 28, compared with the figures for the 1936-37 season is shown in statistics compiled by Dalgety and Company, Limited. Total sales during, the period amounted to 634.004 bales, as against 681.876 last year. For the 10 months ended April, the decrease on the previous year's total was 50,241 bales and for the first nine months of the season it was 97,003. Sales in April totalling 128,000 bales checked the decline.

Offerings for the 11 months totalled 711,714 bales, of which 634,000 were sold, figures for the 1936-37 season being 686,778 and 681,876 respectively. Exports of wool during the same period totalled 740,790 bales, as against 790,418 in tho previous season, a decrease of 49,628. The largest quantity 146,821 bales, was shipped from Wellington, with Napier and Waikokopu (112,778) next in order and Christchurch (99.659) third. Auckland and Opua (89,908) shipped the next largest quantity. Exports during May totalled 121.965 bales, of which the largest quantity, 24,047, was shipped from Wellington. Total offerings in May amounted to 2819 bales, while sales including previous offerings totalled 2997 bales.

Japanese purchases of Australian wool in the 18 months ending June 30 will fall far below the 800,000 bales japan agreed to take when the trade agreement was made, according to n message from Canberra. According; to figures given in the Senate by Mr. H. S. Foil, representing the Minister for Commerce, exports to Japan in the 15 months to April 30 amounted to only 478,308 bales. The Minister said that the Japanese Government had informed the Commonwealth Government that unexpected and abnormal circumstances had made curtailment of Japanese imports unavoidable.

GOLD AND SILVER QUOTATIONS IN LONDON LONDON, June 9 Fine gold is quoted to-day at £7 Os 6Jd an oz., compared with £7 Os 5d yesterday. Silver is quoted at 19d»an oz. spot and 18 11-16 d forward, compared with 18 15-16 d and 18|d yesterday. The quotation for silver at per fine oz. is 20£ d, compared with 20 7-16 d yesterday.
