STOCKS AND SHARES
THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE INTEREST IN TARANAKI OILS An easier tone was evident in the investment market on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. A fair volume of business was put through, but price levels generally showed a downward trend.
The upward swing in oil shares was maintained at the morning call, when Taranaki Oils changed hands at an advance on tho previous day's business. Further sales were recorded around late rates, but at the close business was done 4d below Thursday's rates. Moturoa Oils changed hands at steady levels, but offers were reduced later. Gilt-edged and banks again came in for a fair measure of support, with offers for the latter tending a shade firmer. Auckland Gas were slightly easier on sale. There was more interest in timber shares, Bartholomews changing hands 2s lower than the previous business at the beginning of last year. Support for other timber shares strengthened. Australian issues again weakened. British Tobacco were marked down a shade on sale, and offers were appreciably reduced later. Colonial Sugars also tended easier, while both leading metals continued to lose ground. Electrolytio Zincs clearly showed the weaker tone of the market during the past few weekß in transactions 6s 9d ana 6a lower than the previous business on April 30. Woolworths (Sydney) showed a further slight easing on sale. CLOSING QUOTATIONS
