THIEVES OBTAIN £ll IN CASItIS ATTEMPT ON A POST OFFICE [by telegraph —owy COBHESPONDEXt] PAEROA, Thursday*'The third burglary in Paeroa Within II 10 days occurred in the early hours f? of this morning, when the office 'of |f! the Public Works Department was I entered and the safe blown open explosives. The sum of £lO 19s in cash was taken. A clock in the office had stopped at 4.45 o'clock and several * residents in the vicinity heard a thud at about that hour.
The caretaker, Mr. J. Williamj f ; arrived about 5.30 o'clock and dis.: / covered the damage. The force of the explosion completely shattered the locking mechanism of the safe ' threw fragments of metal about, tear. V : ing into boofe and files. The drawers of the office Stables were also ran*.: sacked.
An attempt was made earlier in the evening to rob the Waikino post office, nine miles from Paeroa, A series $ 1 holes was bored in the door and a see* tion taken out, enabling . the' lock'to be opened. Apparently the intruders £ were disturbed,, for nothing in th? office was displaced.

Jewellery to the value of £3O was re-V . moved from the house of Mr. G-. E. v £j Wilkes, of Tainui Street, HamiHoii, during last night by an intruder who gained entrance, with the aid of a tedder, through a bedroom window.-The* jewellery was the property of Wilkes' daughter, Mrs. Colin Mr. Wilkes was working in a ixcsA . . room in the house at the time, but !.; was not disturbed. When the burglary was discovered, the prints of bairtj feet were found on a windowsill. Several * drawers in Mrs. Browne's room were ransacked. Callaghan, building contractor, of Kenney Street, . last night, by breaking the lock. An un- . successful attempt/was made to remove the battery from the engine of a lorry. ' A similar unsuccessful attempt' was ' made to remove the battery frcm a i car on Mr. W. E. Robert'* premises adjoining.
