ONLY ONE FAVOURITE WINS WHIRLING PERFORMS SOUNDLY f An outstanding feature of the second day of the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting at Ellerslie yesterday was the return to winning form of Valpeen, who scored his second success in the Great Northern Steeplechase, which he won previously in 1934. Valpeen now has the distinction of having won both the Great Northern Steeplechase and the Grand National Steeplechase twice, which is a fine record. Although there were no large dividends, the only favourite to aucceed was Full of Scotch, who was victorious in the Panmure [hardies. Hie King George Handicap was won by the second fancy Whirling, who was always handily placed, and won decisively from Valamito. The Hunt Club Cup was taken by the v improving Power Chief, who gives promise of developing into a fine steeplechaser.

The attendance was 14,000, compared with 30,000 on the •' second day last year, which was the King's Birthday holiday. The Si totalisator handed £46,315, compared with £72,189 10s on the j corresponding day last year. The investments for two days were fj £125,789, against £122,530 10s for the first two days last year, increase of £3258 10s.
